DJ MK (Roots Manuva)
DJ MK is undisputedly one of the single most important figures pushing UK Hip Hop and has been for well over a decade now; from ripping stages through his live shows with Roots Manuva to producing countless invaluable mixtapes (His legendary London underground series influenced nearly every UK Hip Hop DJ) he has not only helped Hip Hop music develop in this country but set the standard for other dj’s to match. These early mixtapes helped him land a slot on the Capital Rap show (‘93-’95) alongside the UK’s very own heavyweight Tim Westwood. After Westwood and the Rap show Itch FM saw MK hosting a show which ran for four whole years before he eventually left for his current weekly residency on Kiss Fm.
MK was the first UK DJ to consistently release well packaged well produced mix tapes which are now sold worldwide. Over the past ten years MK’s turntable talents have taken him across the globe performing in Europe, Australia and the United States. It is not surprising then that UK don Roots Manuva snapped up MK to tour with him for all his live dates, combining one of the most important UK DJ’s with an equally vital lyricist. His credibility as a DJ has led to him judging the UK DMC finals for the last 8 years and the world finals for the past 3. Teaming up with fellow UK heavy hitters, Shortee Blitz, Harry Love & Mr Thing, MK is one quarter of UK DJ crew Extended Players, known for obliterating audiences nationwide. If MK is not on stage performing or on the radio hosting then chances are he is getting busy in the studio, and busy he has been! In the past he has provided cuts on records for the likes of Roots Manuva, Jehst, Lewis Parker and Skitz. ‘Above Board’ is the culmination of over ten years of hard graft, patience, persistence and networking and is his first official legal Mix CD release. Having made quality Mix Tapes for so long MK had to pull out all the stops on this project and the result reads like a who’s who of UK Hip Hop heads – Roots Manuva, Rodney P, Skinnyman, Fallacy, Mystro, Jehst, Kyza, Pirelli, Plan B, Mr Ti2bs, Yungun, Mr Thing, Ransom Badbonez & Harry Love, all stopping by to show love. The result is an expertly mixed showcase of everything British hip-hop has to offer in 2006, and is bound to go down as an essential document of the scene in years to come. This Mix CD follows on from the previous success of record label Antidotes releases: The Nextmen’s ‘Blunted in the backroom’ and Prince Paul’s ‘Hip Hop Gold Dust’ and preceeds the long awaited debut Lp from the one and only Dj Yoda ‘The amazing adventures of Dj Yoda’. Antidote continue to push UK talent in 2006 and with releases like this it is a credit to have them on our side.
