MR. GUEDER
Hot on the heels of the all conquering ‘Süper Güder Breaks Vol.1’ 7 inch – a little beauty that garnered praise from the likes of Mark B, Rob Da Bank, Freddy Fresh, Egon @ Stones Throw, Rob Luis & Big Daddy magazine, and was heard on radio from Pittsburgh to Lyon via Craig Charles on the new BBC 6Music digital channel – comes the second release from Mr.Güder on Funkydown – ‘Süper Güder Breaks Vol.3’.
For those that don’t yet know, Mr.Güder isn’t an ageing Dutch porn star, or even an ageing European funk band. It’s actually just two ageing school friends with an ageing reel to reel 8 track, and a penchant for sparkly drum kits and ageing keyboards.
Beginning as a live drum recording session, the chaps soon found they had the basis of a few releasable recordings, and decided to release them DIY style, using the Funkydown banner that Simon had wanted to become a ‘real record label’ since about 1992. Spurred on by what they heard from other like-minded labels – tru Thoughts, Stones Throw, Breakin’ Bread, they’ve quickly amassed a stack of recordings, and an album is in the works for the near future….
Meanwhile…. sporting oodles of 70’s funk breaks and 60’s jazz loops made popular by 90’s hip hop, ‘Süper Güder Breaks Vol.3’ should perhaps be subtitled ‘Spotters Delight’, but that’s not why we’re releasing it. This is putting the fun back into funk, and you’re supposed to be dancing by now, so look sharp …
The B-side sees the debut of an original Güder composition ‘Diggin Dirt’. Inspired by a day of erm, digging dirt, it has their trademark thug-drums to the fore, and truly does shovel a whole skip load of funk into just under 5 minutes of gut shaking groove. Believe us when we tell you, you will feel more than slightly soiled after hearing this….
Mr.Güder is: Jim Oliver (Lead Guitars, Bass, Moog-like squealing & camp clapping) and Simon Ward (Drums, Rhythm Guitar, Hammond impressions, Percussion & slightly camper clapping) Yes, we know it sounds like a whole barnload of funkateers, but there really are only two of them. The wonders of multitracking….
Now, following umpteen requests for Mr.Güder to start playing live, they’ve drafted in a third old school mate Drew Smyth to handle bass guitar duties. Power Trio Funk! Catch them at a venue near you soon! Mr. Güder - live-funk at its best!
So, what started as an excuse to record some drums for Simon to sample as his alter ego Dr.Rubberfunk turned out quite well.
We hope you agree.
